Choosing the Right Finish for your Flag Display

At our store, flag conversations often begin with "where will you be flying or displaying your flag?". That's because how and where a flag is displayed plays a big role in determining the best flag finish for your needs. Whether you're ordering a custom flag, displaying a seasonal banner, or replacing a worn U.S. flag, we want to ensure it is finished to be flown and shown exactly how you envision.

Here's a guide to the most common flag finishes:

Header & Grommets

This is the most typical finishing for outdoor flags. A sturdy white canvas header is sewn along the left side of the flag with brass grommets in the top and bottom corners. These attach easily to flagpole clips on an in-ground flagpole or EZ rings on a wall-mounted pole. Larger flags have heavy webbing instead of canvas and strong D-rings or roped thimbles instead of grommets - ideal for commercial or high-wind areas.

Open Pole Sleeve

This finish features a hemmed sleeve that allows a pole to slide through, making it a great choice for indoor and parade flags, house banners, and flags displayed on house-mount flagpoles. Most pole sleeves include a small tab sewn inside the sleeve (sometimes at both ends) to attach the flag securely to the flagpole.

Open Pole Sleeve with Fringe

Used for indoor or ceremonial display, this style adds decorative fringe around the flag's edges. While gold fringe is a traditional choice, we can also create custom flags with silver, red, white, blue, or other colored fringe to match your organization, team, or theme.

Closed Pole Sleeve

In this version, the flag's sleeve is sewn closed at the top. The flag simply slides over the top of the flagpole for a sleek, clean look. Note: this style only works on poles that do not have an ornament or finial at the top.

Simple Stitched Perimeter

For situations where the flag is going to be presented in a frame or displayed on a wall, a traditional header is not necessary. Instead, we can neatly stitch around all four sides of the flag for a crisp, professional finish; a simple finish for custom flags being used in indoor frames, displays, exhibits.
