Steps on How to Retire the U.S. Flag
When you retire an American flag, it should ideally be done through a respectful burning ceremony.
Prepare a fire for your ceremony. This can be a bonfire or in a firepit, but preferably contained and safe, as you will need to collect the ashes at the end. To show respect, you need to fold the flag before burning it. The end result is a triangular shape with only the blue stars visible.
When you put the flag on the fire, you can utter a few words, much as at a funeral. Gather the ashes and bury them in a solid wooden box a few feet below the ground. Do this only once the fire has died down and the flag is completely destroyed.
