Never Forgotten: The 25th Anniversary of September 11

September 11, 2001, is a date most Americans will never forget.

Twenty-five years have passed since the morning that forever changed our nation, yet for those who lived through it, the memories remain remarkably vivid. We remember where we were, who we were with, and how the ordinary moments of that Tuesday morning gave way to confusion, heartbreak, and uncertainty. For today's younger generations, September 11 is a chapter in history. For millions of Americans, it is still deeply personal.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives that were lost, honor the courage of those who responded, and reflect on how our nation came together in the days that followed.

More Than a Day of Remembrance

Each year, September 11 is observed as Patriot Day, a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Across the country, American flags are flown at half-staff, moments of silence are observed, names are read aloud, and families gather at memorials to honor loved ones.

The American flag has long been a symbol of freedom, but after September 11 it also became a symbol of comfort, resilience, and hope. Flying the flag on Patriot Day is a quiet but meaningful way to honor those we lost and the heroes who answered the call without hesitation.

Courage in the Face of Tragedy

September 11 will always be remembered for unimaginable loss, but also for extraordinary courage.

Firefighters climbed stairwells knowing the danger before them. Police officers, emergency medical personnel, military members, and countless volunteers risked everything to help others. Passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 made extraordinary sacrifices that saved additional lives. Ordinary people became extraordinary heroes.

Many of those heroes never came home.

The attacks brought immense grief, but they also revealed remarkable compassion, resilience, and selflessness. The examples set by those first responders and everyday citizens continue to inspire us twenty-five years later.

What We Remember

Over the years, we've had the privilege of hearing countless September 11 stories from our customers. Firefighters have shared memories of traveling to New York to assist with recovery efforts. Veterans have told us how that day influenced their decision to serve our country. Others simply tell us where they were when they first heard the news. Every story is different, yet each reminds us how profoundly September 11 affected our nation.

The previous owners of Fly Me Flag often spoke about the days that followed the attacks. They remembered a steady line of vehicles stretching along Ashland Avenue as people came looking for American flags. Here in Green Bay, and across the country, flags appeared on front porches, businesses, churches, and public buildings almost overnight.

People weren't simply buying flags. They were looking for a way to express grief, unity, gratitude, and hope.

We still hold onto the image of the American flag rising above the rubble at Ground Zero. It remains one of the defining images of resilience in our nation's history.

The Lessons That Endure

Time changes our perspective, but it should never erase our memories.

September 11 reminded us how quickly life can change and how deeply we depend on one another. In the days and months that followed, neighbors checked on each other, strangers donated blood, communities gathered in prayer, and Americans found strength in standing together.

The attacks sought to spread fear, yet they also revealed the kindness, generosity, and resilience that exist within our communities. Those lessons remain just as important today.
