Useful Terminology when Buying Custom Flags

Buying custom flags for the first time can be a bit overwhelming, given all the custom flag terminology you have never heard before. Fly Me Flag wants to share some terms to keep in mind when doing your pre-purchase research.

Print Layout Options:

  • Double Sided:
    • Your flag is made by printing two flags and sewing them together with an inner liner between them to prevent show through.
    • Heavier and more expensive but suitable for flags needing visibility from both sides and flags exposed to high winds
    • Common for flags that fly in high winds, such as boat flags some flagpole flags, and golf flags

Finishing Options:

  • Heading & Grommets:
    • White canvas heading with brass grommets
    • Required for flags flown on in-ground flagpoles.
  • Pole Hem or Sleeve:
    • An open sleeve with a tab that slides over the pole
    • Used for indoor, parade flags or garden flags
  • Pole Hem & Fringe:
    • Open pole sleeve as described above with a 2” fringe on three sides
    • Often used for indoor or parade flags with gold fringe.

Printing Methods:

  • Digital Printing:
    • High-resolution direct print on fabric process ideal for complex, multi-color designs.
    • Common for flagpole flags, garden flags, and sports flags
  • Dye Sublimation:
    • Best for high-resolution photographic images.
    • The image does not bleed through to the back of the flag
    • This process is best for double-sided flags or flags being hung on a wall where you don’t see the back of the flag
  • Silk Screen:
    • Traditional method where ink is pushed through screens for each color in your image
    • Best for simple one- or two-color images on flagpole flags.
  • Appliqué:
    • Fabric layers are sewn into place to create designs
    • Ideal for flags with minimal text or imagery
    • Appliqué is also used for more complex designs such as Native American flags or military flags used for ceremonies

Regardless of the way you are going to use your custom flags, this glossary of custom flag terminology will be essential to understand different types of flags, their printing methods, and finishing details, making it easier to decide what’s best for your needs.
