    History on Display

The Gadsden Flag was designed by Colonel Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina during the American Revolution. Featuring a coiled rattlesnake on a yellow field with the words "Don't Tread on Me," it became an enduring symbol of early American independence and resistance.

Gadsden presented the flag to Commodore Esek Hopkins, commander in chief of the Continental Navy fleet. Hopkins used the Gadsden Flag as his personal standard, and his flagship, Alfred, served as the flagship of America's first naval squadron.

The rattlesnake was already becoming an American symbol during the Revolutionary era, representing vigilance and a willingness to defend the colonies. Today, the Gadsden Flag remains one of the most recognizable flags from early American history.
